2019/2020 Installation Meeting
Kiwanis Club of Rockcastle County installed newly elected 2019-2020 officers and board members on Thursday, October 3, 2019. Kayla Prewitt will serve as President. Crystal Rush will continue to serve as Treasurer. Rose Brown will continue her role as Secretary and serve as Vice-President as well. Board members for the 2019-2020 club year are Martha Cox, Tammy Cox, Vicki Cox, Bentley Cromer, Leila Cromer, Gary Mink, Gertha Mink, Jamie Saylor, Glenda Smith and Eliza York-Hansel. Our club is looking forward to another year of serving Rockcastle County’s youth while also creating a better community.

Kiwanis Members Visit Roundstone Elementary School Garden
Members of the Kiwanis Club of Rockcastle County visited the Roundstone Elementary School garden on Thursday, September 26th. Members enjoyed lunch with students prior to visiting the school garden and listening to a short presentation by Melissa Fairchild and Larry Bullen. Mrs. Fairchild, currently a 1st grade teacher, initiated the garden project about 10 years ago. Mr. Bullen, owner of Double-D Apple Orchard, assists with the garden’s maintenance and upkeep. The garden is used for a variety of student lessons and provides valuable hands-on experience. Kiwanis is proud to be a sponsor of the school garden. Rockcastle Arts Association Presents at Kiwanis Meeting
Carrie Mullins with the Rockcastle Arts Association was the guest speaker at the August 29, 2019 Kiwanis meeting. She shared details about past and upcoming projects, programs and workshops. Kiwanis is especially proud to be a partner for the Noel Night Market and Annual Tree Lighting, which will be held December 5, 2019 downtown Mt. Vernon. Kiwanis Members Get Farmer’s Market Update
Holly Robinson, Rockcastle Farmer’s Market Coordinator and owner of Hallow Springs Farm, was the guest speaker at the August 1st Kiwanis meeting. She spoke about the local initiative to have a permanent structure built at the site of the current farmer’s market and how grants and donations have been obtained to fund the project. Holly explained how this expansion would allow our market to add vendors and be open most of the year. Her presentation was very informative and we appreciate her speaking to our club.

Family Court Judge Speaks to Kiwanis Members About Drug Court
Marcus Vanover, Family Court Judge for Rockcastle, Lincoln and Pulaski counties, was the guest speaker at the July 25th meeting. Judge Vanover explained the Drug Court program and shared how each phase sets high expectations for participants, all whom are suffering from addiction/substance abuse issues. We appreciate Judge Vanover speaking with our club and his commitment to improving lives through the Drug Court program. Representative Brenda Speaks at Kiwanis Meeting
Members of the Rockcastle County Kiwanis Club heard a legislative update from State Representative R. Travis Brenda at the June 13th meeting. He discussed state employee pensions, taxes, infrastructure and other current topics. Representative Brenda serves Rockcastle, Garrard and Madison (partial) counties. We appreciate his willingness to speak with our members.

Kiwanis Donates to Local Library
On Wednesday, May 22nd, the Rockcastle County Kiwanis Club donated $200 to the Rockcastle County Public Library for the purchase of children’s books. Circuit Court Clerk Presents to Kiwanis
Rockcastle Circuit Court Clerk Eliza York-Hansel (also a Kiwanis club member) was our guest speaker at the May 16th Kiwanis club meeting. She explained the new drivers licensing procedures that will go into effect in the coming months and how the changes impact citizens. We appreciate her dedication to not only our club, but all citizens of Rockcastle County.

Rockcastle Kiwanis Partners with RCHS Student Council
RCHS Student Council Members Alexa Bussell and Kylee Fain along with RCHS Youth Service Center Jessie Mahaffey accepted a donation by Rockcastle Kiwanis to be used for the new RCHS hygiene center. The RCHS Student Council, in partnership with the Youth Service Center as well as the FCCLA and Young Feminists clubs, designed and implemented a hygiene center for young ladies at RCHS. Student Council members Kylee Fain and Alexa Bussell managed the project, which will allow girls to obtain needed hygiene items at a self-serve station in the downstairs restrooms. “Girls needed an option to be able to take care of personal issues without having to go through the…

Jeff Vanhook Guest Speaker at April 25th Meeting
Jeff Vanhook, Executive Director of the Rockcastle County Industrial Development Authority was the guest speaker at the April 25th Rockcastle Kiwanis membership meeting. Mr. Vanhook provided an update regarding community projects and development. He discussed the upcoming addition of a Family Dollar Store and Marathon gas station in Livingston, an update in regards to the Microfoodery plant in Mt. Vernon and other possibilities for Rockcastle County’s future. He also provided an explanation of tax increment financing (TIF) and the financial impact for our community.
